Mae LLP has been chosen as the architect to carry out the re-design of Hillington Square. The practice was chosen from a shortlist of eight architects by a panel which included Wayne Hemingway, Hillington Square recidents and Freebridge Community Housing staff. The shortlisted practices were accessed against a set of criteria after each were asked to submit proposals for how they would transform Hillington Square.
The project has attracted huge attention, with initial expressions of interest submitted from 77 practices from around the world. Wayne Hemingway of HemingwayDesign, who are leading the redesign of Hillington Square with Freebridge Community Housing, said:
“We had a wonderful response from the architect community, the opportunity to work on such a challenging and potentially socially rewarding project has clearly struck a chord. It’s often a cliché to say that ‘it was hard to choose a winner’ but in this case it really was difficult, the standard was very high.
“However the chosen practice, Mae Architects presented great thinking and importantly demonstrated a passion and desire to join the team, and work with the residents and the wider community in transforming Hillington Square and helping to make Hillington Square an eminently more liveable part of the town and a place that Kings Lynn is proud of.”
Mae had the opportunity to discuss the project with representatives from Freebridge and the local community at special event on Wednesday 13th April. The architects will now begin drawing up initial designs for the redesign of Hillington Square, working in partnership with the local community, Wayne Hemingway and Freebridge.
